Back from Camping...What You DON'T Want To See

Packing up camping and coming home went without a hitch. Paul & Lisa took the tent we borrowed in their trailer on the way there, but because we stayed an extra night, we had to bring it home in our already packed car. We managed to get it all in...still not sure how...and I fully intended to do a before and after of the boot once we were home.

I only got as far as the before;

This was taken at the campsite and because we were pushing sign out time, I thought I'd wait until we got home to show you just how much we managed to get packed in that boot!

After a 2 hour trip home...traffic was busy through the city...I was desperate for the toilet so switched off and ran inside. Only when I came out the bathroom that is opposite our bedroom, did I see this.

The above picture was taken after the drawers were pushed back in.

I can honestly say with my hand on my heart that I did NOT leave my house like this when we left.

More Camping Stories

After our eventful beginnings in our new venture as "campers", we arrived without any further problems to our final destination, Torquay Holiday Park.

This wasn't anywhere near the type of outback camping...in fact as someone put it, this was more like "glam-ping". But not in the full sense of the word. We still had shared ablutions, shared kicthen, shared outdoor theatre, shared swimming pool and spa, shared mini-golf and shared playing area. Shared tennis courts and shared jumping pillow.

So not outback camping, but not quite "glam-ping" either. It was actually a great place especially for the kids with so much to do. It isn't a big place so the kids can go off and do their own thing and find their way back to base easily enough. Which they often did. A couple of the families had been before so once we'd arrived the other kids soon took it upon themselves to show our 2 everywhere. Which was good because we had a tent to put up and some unpacking to do. Again.

By the time we were done we made our way over to the others tents. Three of the families were side-by-side so with the tents set up to allow a large area we could all congregate at one time and drink and be merry together.

We spent the first day practically solely at the pool because the weather was a-may-zing and we knew it wasn't going to last.

The jumping pillow that even I had a go on. How kids do it for hours on end, I have no idea. Within minutes my legs were killing me! And then I still had that jelly leg feeling once I was back on terra firma.

This was the play area that was between the shower block and the camp kitchen.

The kitchen itself was kitted out really well. There was a very large catering style fridge where campers could keep their food as well as a microwave, toaster, hot plates, kitchen bbq's, grill oven and even a tap that gave you instant 98* water for hot drinks. We have those at work too and is on my wish-list one day when I have a dream kitchen.

Mel and the mister doing the bbq on a rainy night - we always do things with a glass of wine!
Next to the kitchen was the outdoor theatre where movies were shown most nights for the kids. There was also a games and tv room near the entrance but because there was a large flat screen tv in the kitchen that had picnic style benches, that was usually on one or other channel. And those fancy-shmancy caravaners had their own tv's anyway, putting us novices to shame.

On Easter Sunday, the campsite organised an Easter Egg hunt, but to make it fair to all the kids instead of hiding eggs in a designated area, the kids were each given a slip of paper with 3 rabbits on it. The idea was to go to three spots throughout the site and get a rabbit crossed off. Once this was done, they returned to the kitchen and were given an egg each. As long as all 3 rabbits had been crossed off.

But before all that even began, all the kids that belonged to our group gathered around Mel's tent for a tonful of homemade pancakes!

This is the man collecting his egg after all 3 of his rabbits were crossed off. The kids started at the reception area and first stop was the swimming pool. Next was the mini golf area and finally the jumping pillow. This took then from one side of the campsite to the other and ended in the kitchen that's at about the halfway mark.

When all the kids had collected their eggs, they were asked to gather at the play area where 2 staff members climbed to the top of the slides and then threw all the remaining eggs into the crowd. I helped the little man pick some up...he tends to wait until they fall in his hands rather than push and shove to collect fallen ones. But his mom doesn't!

I helped him collect 7 more eggs. He'd already eaten his "hunted" one. Sunshine helped Mel's 3-year old get from place to place so I wasn't around to get her in action, but they both proudly showed their winnings!

Not only did we have some very happy kids, but suddenly very energetic too!

Our First Australian Camping Trip

Wow! Within minutes of me posting about my new life, I had quite a few hits so it's great to know you are all still out there! Thanks for sticking around.

So where have I been and what have we been up to recently?

Well, for 5 nights over the Easter weekend we did something we haven't done as a family before. Camping. Neighbours Paul & Lisa invited us to join them and by the time Easter came around, there were 5 families in total going...to Torquay Holiday Park.

We used to go when I was little. My mom and dad have a caravan and the day before we went anywhere my dad would take the car to the garage and get it washed, fill up with petrol, pump the tyres and check the oil and water so that nothing else had to be done. In the meantime back at home, my mom would make sure the caravan was all cleaned and stocked with everything we needed. I can't remember what us 3 kids did. Probably bothered them like kids do.

Now as you may or may not know, camping takes a lot of prep work. Especially if you don't have a single thing required for such an adventure. Actually that's not true. Before our stuff arrived from the UK, the Mr had bought a camping table and camping chairs for us to use until our kitchen table and chairs arrived. We left to go on the Thursday...the day before Good Friday...and had bought everything we needed the weekend before. How's that for being prepared?

So with a borrowed tent, 4 brand new sleeping bags, and a few other essential items we thought we might need, we packed the car boot until it was choc-a-bloc full. The kids were buckled up in the back seat and even more stuff was packed around them so that nearly every inch of available space - except the drivers area - was jam packed. We were all set and ready to go.

And the car wouldn't start.

There is absolutely nothing more deflating than things not going to plan.

The Mr and I jump out and being the non-mechanics we are have absolutely no idea what we are looking at under the bonnet. The only thing was the battery which had died on us before. So I let the car roll back while Mr moves his car so we can try and jump start it. Expect the jumper leads are in the boot. Under all the camping gear. Right at the back where we should have been able to open it from between the kids seats, but it had been locked closed from inside the boot.

Aaaaalll the camping gear had to come out again. Only to find that jump-starting the car didn't work. Aaaaalll the camping gear went back in, the kids were hoiked out of the car and back into the house so that we could charge the battery with the portable charger. Thank goodness we had one of those.

So for the next hour we sat inside the nearly dark house playing on the PS3.

Fortunately for us, the charger worked and we were soon on the road.

Only to stop at the petrol station to fill up, pump the tyres and check the oil and water.

Next time we go, I'm doing a "dad".

My New Life

I've been a stay-at-home mum since I was 7 months pregnant with the little man which makes it nearly 6 years. In February of this year, the little man started primary school, and it was not long before this that I started to have intense visions.

Visions of what I would do with all that extra time...lunching with the ladies...day trips to all those places the rest of the family don't appreciate, like flower shows...the Dandenongs, shopping trips to the city, taking myself to the morning movie shows, baking, maybe a couple of short courses...you get the picture.

But then something happened. I was volunteered by someone to help a company on a project. It all sounded ideal. I could work from home, was provided with all the necessary tools to do the job at home, could work my own hours, and earn a good wage. And if I didn't want to work on a particular day, then I wouldn't have to. As long as the job was getting done it didn't matter when it was getting done. So I would have to re-jig all those visions...I could still get out a couple of times a week.

Unfortunately it didn't all work out as planned. Oh, I'm still doing the job. Just not at home. There were some connection problems to start with so it just became easier for me to go to the office and work there. Since I was also testing new software, it was easier & handier to be able to liaise with the software dept then and there. And that's basically where I've been since the beginning of February...why there hasn't been anything happening on this here blog since then.

I do have loads to write about, but for now I won't be here as often as I'd like to be. I'm still trying to get myself into a routine so that not all the home chores are done on the weekend. Despite the job itself, I still only work school hours (currently 9.30am - 3pm) so those few extra hours after school is time enough to get the little jobs done.

This also means my visions have changed. I'm now thinking bigger house...new car...overseas holidays...breast reduction surgery...you know, all the important stuff ;-)

So this is where the apology comes in. I'm sorry for being away so long...I know someone out there checks in everyday (hi Tania!) and must be wondering where the hell I've been. Thank you for sticking around...I love you all!
