The Overhanging Jacaranda Tree

Our neighbour, Samantha, has a small Jacaranda tree that overhangs onto our drive.

Now Jacaranda trees are really lovely. When in full bloom the whole tree is covered in these stunning blue/purple flowers.

The capital city of South Africa, Pretoria...not Johannesburg as many people think, is popularly known as The Jacaranda City because of the many tree-lined streets of Jacaranda's as well as many in parks and gardens.

When the flowers start falling from the tree, they cover the streets...it looks like a blue/purple carpet has been laid out...but they make a mess. A really pretty mess.

As does the one that overhangs our drive. The problem I have with this lovely tree is that it overhangs directly over where I park my car on the drive.

That means that the pretty mess is all over my car. And it's really starting to get to me...I can't move further back because the house is there. I can't park more forward otherwise I block the driveway the Mr needs to get in and out. I can't park out on the street either. I basically have nowhere else to go.

It can rain quite a lot in Melbourne, which means that if my car is full of Jacaranda blooms and it rains, they stick all over my car. They get under the windscreen wipers...collect at the top of the bonnet...and between the back windscreen and the boot.

This means that washing my car seems a waste...it'll be clean today and full of sticky blooms again tomorrow.

As much as I wouldn't like to see something so lovely cut away...I think the time has come where I will be needing to do something about it.

It's time to get tough.

  1. They are so pretty and yet such a pain too. We have to constantly chop back some bourganvillia for a similar reason.

  2. Remember Rob, you're only renting and not staying there forever...give the poor, beautiful Jacaranda a break!...and remember it could be worse...you could be living in QLD and parking under a mango tree...you would then have bat sh*t all over your car!! Robx

I know I know. At least it gives me a good excuse not to have to wash the car!

As far as I know we're allowed to do the same. If I cut back the overhanging bit, it's half the tree gone. Might just nip off the flowers though...

Bourganvillia is another one that also makes such a pretty mess though...
