Nature Strip: Crocosmia in Flower

Our nature strip is nothing really to look at. Or at least it wasn't until a few months ago before I took no liberties on it. I'll show you that in another post.

Amongst the nothingness though are two plants that have these amazing bright orange flowers. The Crocosmia aren't an Australian native, but with similar weather to their native South Africa, they thrive here.

They really brighten up the mostly dead nature strip and I love orange flowers.

Though there are many flowers on one stalk, the flowers when open actually face downwards. Well these ones do anyway.

They don't look like anything particularly special until they flower. I don't remember seeing them last summer...I wasn't really looking...but now that the nature strip has been all cleaned and tidied up they just pop out amongst the browns that surround it.

In the United States they are known as Coppertips or Fallen Stars and Montbretia in the UK.

Karen also has some growing in her garden, and it was through her post I learned what they were. Thanks Karen! Unfortunately I don't have many of the other stunning plants and flowers she has...but one day.

  2. Now it's all complete, great work. Your photos really highlight the beautiful bright orange. They must be a delight to see on the nature strip. The flowers on mine face downwards too and the reedy leaves are closer to horizontal than vertical, yet still quite pretty, especially after rain.
