Aussie Christmas Songs: Jingle Bells

So we all know the traditional Christmas songs that the radio stations start playing in October and the malls filter down through their exhaustive PA system. We then find ourselves humming along to those tunes that have us pulling our hair out by the time the bid day itself arrives.

Or is that just me?

Are you one to put Boney M on full blast while you decorate the tree and the rest of the house? Slade? The Pogues? Shakin’ Stevens? I’m just showing my age here, aren’t I?

Anyway, so now that we are nowhere near the North Pole and Santa can’t deliver my our presents in his sleigh coz the reindeer don’t have soft snow to land in – and besides it’s too darn hot for reindeer here – words to Christmas lyrics have to reflect that.

So over the next few weeks, I am going to post the Aussie version Christmas Jingle’s we all know and love. And for all those who don’t speak Aussie, I will add at the end, a dictionary.

Australian Jingle Bells

Dashing through the bush,
in a rusty Holden ute,
Kicking up the dust,
esky in the boot,
Kelpie by my side,
singing Christmas songs,
It's summer time and I am in,
my singlet, shorts and thongs

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summer's day, hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden ute!

Engines getting hot,
we dodge the kangaroos,
The swaggie climbs aboard,
he is welcome too
All the family's there,
sitting by the pool,
Christmas Day the Aussie way,
by the barbeque
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summer's day, hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden ute!

Come the afternoon,
Grandpa has a doze,
The kids and Uncle Bruce,
are swimming in their clothes,
The time comes 'round to go
we take the family snap,
Pack the car and all shoot through,
before the washing up

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Christmas in Australia on a scorching summer's day, hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells, Christmas time is beaut!
Oh what fun it is to ride in a rusty Holden ute!
